Christmas Mass

In view of the continuing pandemic, the liturgical celebration of Christmas cannot be the same as in other years.  Our guiding principles in planning are these:

  • The safety of parishioners, clergy, and staff is paramount.
  • The directives in place demand that we provide social distancing at all gatherings.  In effect, this limits the number of people that can be admitted to our churches (Saint Kilian - 250 people; Holy Sepulcher - 150 people).  We have no choice but to follow these directives.
  • The number of priests available to celebrate Masses this Christmas are limited.  Two years ago, our ordained clergy consisted of three assigned priests, three retired priests and four deacons; this Christmas we have one assigned priest, two retired priests and three deacons.
  • Please note the Bishop's dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and holydays applies also to Christmas.
  • Those who are ill are advised not to attend Mass.
  • Last year, our grouping (both parishes) celebrated thirteen Masses and had nearly 8.000 people attending.  Before the pandemic, approximately 4,000 people attending our nine weekend Masses (for the grouping).  As the pandemic continues, approximately one third of that number are regularly attending.

Considering these factors, the schedule below is what we hope to provide for Christmas this year.

We are encouraging families to visit our churches on Christmas Eve (or Christmas Day) when there are less crowds.  Because the Eucharist (celebrated and received) is central to our Catholic faith, we are providing an opportunity for those who choose to visit the churches early on Christmas Eve to also be able to receive Holy Communion.

For all Christmas Masses, when the church is full (with people seating at safe distances), the inner doors of the church will be closed and no one will be admitted (distancing requirements simply do not permit it).  However, we will have a deacon or Eucharistic Minister available to distribute Holy Communion to them and ask that they exit the church and return home to watch mass on our YouTube channel.
