Holy Sepulcher Catholic School’s Kindergarten curriculum is aligned with Pennsylvania State standards and includes varied styles of instruction to ensure that each child’s potential is fully achieved.

As a support to the general curriculum, Kindergarten Centers provide the children the opportunity to either reinforce previously taught skills or encounter new challenges for those who are ready. These include writing, reading, listening and problem solving activities. Children can also engage in art, play dough, blocks and computer learning games. Secondary skills include personal responsibility, cooperative play and self-directed learning. 

Mathematics

The Mathematics Curriculum promotes conceptual, computational and problem solving proficiency using Progress in Mathematics by Sadlier-Oxford. Emphasis is on recognition and printing of numbers 1-20, comparing and ordering, estimation and computation, measurement, sorting and classifying, graphing and interpreting charts, identifying coins and value, ordinal numbers, recognizing place values & patterning skills, counting by 10’s, 2’s and 5’s and reading the calendar and a number line. Children will have opportunities to use manipulatives to enhance their thinking skills that will lead to the eventual development of abstract thinking.

Language Arts

The Language Arts Curriculum encompasses a wide range of skills necessary for communication through speaking, listening, reading and writing. Lessons incorporate phonological awareness, phonics, beginning, middle and ending sounds, high frequency (sight words), syllables, rhyming words, word families and decoding skills. The curriculum focuses on vocabulary, making predictions, noting details, cause and effect, comparisons and strategies that prepare the students to begin their reading journey. It also incorporates grammar, handwriting, basic writing skills and sentence structure. Using the Scott Foresman Reading Street series, children are engaged in guided reading as a whole group takes a picture walk through a book, then in small groups reads with a partner. Children are immersed in shared reading as the whole group reads text sections aloud, looking for sight words or rhyming words. In order to be exposed to a wide variety of authors and literature, children daily participate in read alouds in which a story is read to the group to emphasize listening comprehension by asking students to make predictions about the story or retell it in their own words. Journaling and creative writing are introduced as well.

Religion Curriculum

Using the Sadlier-We Believe series, the children are guided through the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, celebrating feasts and Holy Days while learning about the lives of the Saints. Children also learn basic Catholic prayers & Christian meditation and participate in weekly Liturgy. The goal of the curriculum is to give the children an Incarnational (God is with us) world-view.

Science

In order to engage in and better understand the world around them, the Science Curriculum provides children the opportunity to explore the following concepts: daily weather conditions, seasons, observe the growth of plants and the life cycle of the butterfly, distinguish between living and non-living things, use of a magnifying glass for observations, as well as other opportunities to explore and complete hands on lessons and activities. Social Studies

The Social Studies Curriculum provides opportunities to develop and enhance reading skills, thinking skills and general knowledge of the world we live in. Children will engage in lessons about the responsibilities of citizens, how government works, basic economic systems, where we live and work, understand the difference between wants and needs, recognize of the importance of community helpers and learn to be courteous and kind to others for the good of all. Spanish

The Spanish Curriculum provides the children the opportunity to develop an oral vocabulary of common words and phrases including numbers, parts of the body, colors, family, greetings, songs and classroom objects. 

Art

The Art Curriculum gives children the opportunity to express themselves through different media by drawing, painting, creating simple patterns and, making crafts while being introduced to a variety of artists and cultures. A dedicated, certified Art teacher conducts lessons in addition to classroom art activities.

Music

The Music Curriculum is incorporated daily as a means to instill a sense of patriotism for our country, to express our love of God and for pure enjoyment during finger plays and seasonal songs. Formal instruction from a dedicated instructor provides the knowledge of following notes and tones as well as the opportunity to rehearse and perform a Christmas program. Additional skills include listening, sign language to accompany some songs, basic rhythms and keeping the beat with simple instruments.

Computer Experiences

Computer experiences include basic knowledge of the parts of a computer, navigating the keyboard, memory storage and listening skills using head phones. Reading and math are reinforced with software games.

Physical Education

Gym provides necessary physical exercise and coordination to maintain a healthy body. Gross motor skills, team work, sportsmanship, agility and eye-hand coordination are reinforced with a variety of games, relays and exercises
